Life Science Management (B. A.)

Apply until August 31!

The life sciences focus on biotechnological processes used to develop new drugs and plant varieties, produce food or manufacture everyday products such as detergents and cosmetics. Trail-blazing innovations are a central pillar for building a sustainable, bio-based economy. They are the key to effective therapies and precise diagnostics in healthcare.

This is where the Life Science Management programme comes in: At the interface between the "classical" disciplines of biotechnology, digitisation and economics, we train students interested in business administration in practice-oriented management subjects.

Bachelor of Arts (B. A.)

7 Semester

Winter

in progress

Yes Dual Offers

German

Structure

1st - 3rd semester

Your studies in Life Science Management begin with an introduction week during which you will participate in an excursion and acquire business learning and working techniques.

In the first part of your studies, you will acquire basic skills in the three subject areas of Economics & Law, Management and Life Sciences based on the latest research findings. Modules such as Business Private Law, Project Management or Technology and Innovation Management complete the first part of the program.

In addition, you must complete a basic internship of eight weeks at a company.

The course is taught predominantly in German.

4th - 7th semester

In the fourth semester, you will deepen your management knowledge in particular. One focus is on entrepreneurship and digital business. You will also take the first sub-module Digital Transformation in Healthcare (eHealth).

The fifth semester is the practical semester, which you ideally complete at a company from the biotech industry.

In the sixth semester, you will take various in-depth modules from the fields of life sciences and economics, which you can choose yourself, for example on topics related to digitalization, the food sector or the agricultural sector.  You will also complete the second submodule Digital Transformation in Healthcare (eHealth). There is also a social project that will count towards your degree.

In the seventh semester, you will write your Bachelor's thesis and can choose further specialization modules from the field of Life Science Management. The semester is supplemented by a seminar on Governance, Compliance & Ethics.

It is mainly taught in German. Individual in-depth modules are offered in English.

Quick Info

Admission and application

The Life Science Management program starts in the winter term. Application via Hochschulstart (DOSV) is not necessary.
Registration for the study program starts on May 2 for the winter semester. Online application is possible via the Primuss applicant portal of THI.

Find more details on our bachelor application here.

International students
Anyone with an international university degree/higher education qualification wanting to study at a university in Germany needs a so-called Hochschulzugangsberechtigung (HZB), or higher education entrance qualification. This lets applicants show that their educational background or professional qualification allows them to study in Germany, i.e. they have the necessary higher education entrance qualification to register for a course.

The recognition of the qualification is linked to certain requirements. If the certificate of education is recognised as a higher education entrance qualification in Germany, the international student may apply for all courses (general qualification) or for certain courses (subject-specific qualification). Two to three semesters of study in the home country may be recognised as a higher education entrance qualification in Germany, depending on the country of origin. Source: German Academic Exchange Service, DAAD, June 2016.

The following link provides information for university applicants from abroad about the application process at the THI.

Dual studies or studies with in-depth practical

In addition to the classic degree course structure, it is also possible to study Life Science Management in a dual studies programme or to combine it with vocational experience.

The dual studies programme enables a combination of practical training elements in a company with the theoretical education provided by the university. There is a choice of either the joint model (academic study + vocational training) or the degree course with vocational experience (academic study + intense practical phases). There is an obvious advantage to students here: practically oriented academic study generally enables a particularly smooth transition from university to the world of work. What is more, the student usually receives financial remuneration from the company concerned.

In the joint model, students may start working at the company several months before the start of the first semester, depending on the company concerned. At the start of the course there is an alternation between theory (during the semester) and practical experience (between semesters and during the practical semesters). In order to embark on a dual studies programme, students have to apply to both a company and to THI (be sure to take note of company application deadlines!). See here for details of partner companies.

More info on our dual studies-pages, or check dual cooperation partner companies. Even if no partner company is currently active in this degree programme, you are welcome to contact us.

Job profiles

Graduates have a wide range of job opportunities, which are geared to the specialisations of the study programmes. The following positions are possible directly after graduation, e.g.:

  • Management trainee or management assistant in a company in the medical technology, pharmaceutical or food industry
  • Junior controller in health care facilities such as hospitals, special clinics or in a health insurance company
  • Business planner in a company producing organic products
  • Account manager in the marketing & sales department for medical products and laboratory equipment
  • Project manager in a research-intensive biotech company
  • Buyer for selected procurement groups in an environmental technology company
  • Talent manager in the human resources department of a start-up company

International

THI has set itself the goal of encouraging as many students as possible to undertake a study trip or internship abroad. This is because international experience enhances job prospects - not just due to the language skills acquired abroad but first and foremost because of additional qualities such as independence, tolerance and flexibility.

For this reason we would encourage you to take this opportunity and make the most of the study trip or internship programmes offered by THI in other countries. Our international network consists of more than 130 partner universities as well as numerous international companies and it is growing constantly worldwide. In this connection, students should feel free to use the THI International Office as a central point of contact.
