Ingolstadt International Lecture Series on Electric Mobility

Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt (THI) will continue the "InternationalLecture Series on Electric Mobility" in this winter semester. This series is in close cooperation with the AWARE (Bavarian Center for Applied Research and Technology) with Latin America, the Indo-German Collaborative Research Center on Intelligent Transportation Systems and the SENSE BAY (Safe Energy Storages Bavaria Network).

We invited professors from our partner universities in Australia (RMIT, Melbourne), Brazil (UFPR and LACTEC, Curitiba) and India (Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur) to give interesting lectures on electric mobility. In addition, industry lectures from German automotive and aviation industry and from THI itself will be presented.

This lecture series will be a live digital lectures series, which will be streamed to all participating partner universities. Please note the different starting times and days of the lectures, which result from different time zones. All lectures are held in English and via Zoom. The lectures are scheduled for about 30 minutes. A subsequent discussion with the audience will close out the evening.

The auditorium consists of students, industry experts and mobility enthusiasts of all ages. The lectures are meant for the public, so you are very welcome.

Thursday, Oct. 21, 2021 “Project HATS³: A brief overview regarding safety, security and accident analysis“

Speaker: Robin Langer – Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt

Due to the rapid increase in the automation of vehicles, the software complexity is also increasing. This leads inevitably to system-side malfunctions. To avoid these system-side malfunctions and furthermore prevent malicious attackers from taking advantage of these vehicle vulnerabilities, the CARISSMA project HATS³ helps. This lecture provides a brief overview of the HATS³ project, the test bench developed and topics related to safety, security and accident analysis.

It is necessary to use processes and methods to make the complexity manageable. In his lecture, the speaker will discuss methods of orchestration for digital twins in the development context in the automotive sector. Processes and use cases for the continuous development of digital twins for the product creation process will be presented.

Thursday, Nov. 11, 2021 “Sustainable Battery Lifecycle Management and Chances for Second Life”

With a rapidly growing market share of electric vehicles in the global market, the demand on lithium-ion batteries is continuously growing. To ensure true sustainability, the environmental impact of a battery along the whole value chain must be considered. Application of batteries beyond their first life influences actions from very beginning of design concept phase and virtual solutions will contribute to high efficiency in development for saving valuable resources. Clever management of batterie’s life via monitoring from 1st life to 2nd life prolongs lifetime and prepares for 2nd use. AVL battery lifecycle management combines long years’ know-how in development, testing and simulation, including ageing modelling, lifetime prediction, data management, virtual driving monitoring/strategy optimization, state-of-healthy estimation and measurement. This lecture will provide an overview on sustainable battery lifecycle management and the fundamental knowledge on battery re-use and recycling.

Thursday, Nov. 25, 2021 “Battery Lifespan Forecast: Non-Specialist Approach for Data Treatment”

Battery ageing is due to physical chemical degradation of its components, it is heavily influenced by operational parameters and determines both safety and long term financial analysis. Battery users, however, aren’t always familiar with electrochemistry and materials engineering.

In this lecture, it will be presented methods to estimate and quantify battery degradation by a detailed analysis of its datasheets, operational parameters and sizing. It will be presented an ongoing work to quantify the effect of average state of charge on the battery‘s calendar life, using, exclusively datasheet information. Results and practical application of this method will also be presented.

Thursday, Dec. 9,2021 “Battery Diagnostics and Prognostics for Electric Vehicles Applications“

Batteries are key elements in electric vehicles. Failure of the battery pack or even certain cells within the pack may lead to complete grounding of the vehicle. This becomes particularly irritating and sometimes very inconvenient, if this happens when the vehicle is being driven around away from the service stations. It is therefore necessary to predict and diagnose such issues well before it has caused enough damage to the pack. This talk will talk about these issues and how to diagnose such conditions using the operating data of the vehicle.

Friday, Dec. 10, 2021 “Hydrogen Energy for Sustainable Mobility”

The lecture will briefly review technological options for clean mobility with narrowing down the focus on hydrogen and fuel cell technologies. This includes discussing advantages and challenges of hydrogen solution followed by presenting its global state of development. The infrastructure requirements for deploying hydrogen solutions will also be discussed.

The worldwide electrification trend of the transport sector requires the development of highly efficient and cost-effective electrified powertrain solutions. State of the art electric powertrains have the inherent advantage of high efficiencies. But future worldwide legislative demand to limit the energy consumption with values <12 kWh/100km for C- Segment vehicles. This is additionally guiding the focus of development towards total efficiency. One major key is to choose the right semiconductor technology.

Thursday, Jan. 13, 2022 “PEM fuel cells for heavy duty application – component development and smart operation”

Recently the projected major application of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells has shifted from light-duty automotive to heavy-duty vehicles, the technical requirements of such system has accordingly changed. Further research and development are focused on meeting the increased demand of fuel efficiency and durability. In this presentation, the efforts to tackle these challenges through development of advanced components and smart operation strategy will be reviewed and discussed.
