Optimized environment for performing partial discharge tests

A view into the absorber chamber

Laboratory engineer Xiaojing Zhao and PhD student Andreas Rauscher recently commissioned the new absorber chamber for our ELS research group. The test chamber is constructed from wooden boards, industrial aluminum foil and pyramid absorbers. Currently, the setup will primarily be used for the partial discharge testing research project (https://www.thi.de/forschung/institut-fuer-innovative-mobilitaet-iimo/els/teilentladungspruefung-an-elektrischen-maschinen/).

In a partial discharge test, the stators of electrical machines are subjected to high voltage and partial breakdowns in the insulation system are detected with the aid of antennas. The latter detect the electromagnetic waves emitted as a result of the partial discharges. The aim of using the new anechoic chamber is to create a reproducible environment for carrying out the partial discharge tests and to shield it from external sources of electromagnetic interference. The setup will also be used for follow-up projects and electromagnetic compatibility studies in the future.
