More Living Space for Students in Ingolstadt: Laying of the Foundation Stone for ‘Lutz21’

Studierendenwerk Erlangen-Nürnberg is creating urgently needed living space for students in Ingolstadt. The ceremonial laying of the foundation stone for the new ‘Lutz21’ hall of residence in Lutzstraße set an important milestone. By the winter semester of 2026/27, 231 subsidized places will be created near the university. The construction costs are estimated at around 35 to 40 million euros.

The Managing Director of Studierendenwerk Erlangen-Nürnberg, Mathias M. Meyer, emphasizes the difficult situation on the student housing market in Ingolstadt: ‘Rents are high, suitable properties are expensive and rare. We are therefore all the more pleased that we will be able to quickly realize the new ‘Lutz21’ hall of residence together with strong partners and thus make a substantial contribution to improving the situation locally.’

‘The creation of affordable student accommodation is of central importance to the state government. With 231 new places to live, the project will substantially improve the tight housing situation in fast-growing Ingolstadt. The funding provided by the ‘Young Housing’ program will be used sensibly and quickly by the Erlangen-Nuremberg Student Union. With this pace of housing construction, we are setting a nationwide example in Bavaria,’ emphasized Bavaria's Construction Minister Christian Bernreiter in his speech.

The Bavarian State Minister for Science and the Arts, Markus Blume, also emphasizes the importance of the project: ‘Ingolstadt University of Applied Sciences is growing rapidly and is also attracting more and more international students. Ingolstadt is one of the most dynamic cities in Bavaria. This makes affordable housing for students all the more important. We are delighted that Studierendenwerk Erlangen-Nürnberg is realising this important project.’

THI President Professor Walter Schober agreed: ‘This student residence is an important first step in the right direction. We need more affordable student accommodation, especially given the enormous growth of THI in recent years. If we create good conditions for students, we will succeed in attracting bright minds to Ingolstadt and retaining these drivers of innovation and specialists of tomorrow in the region in the long term.’

The new hall of residence is being built near the Nordbahnhof transport hub and is easily accessible both by public transport and by car. Ingolstadt University of Applied Sciences and the Faculty of Economics at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt are just ten minutes away by bike.

With the completion of ‘Lutz21’, the Studierendenwerk will more than double its accommodation offer in Ingolstadt. Together with the existing halls of residence in Münzbergstrasse, Beckerstrasse and Hildegard-Knef-Strasse, a total of 432 publicly subsidised residential places will be available in the Danube city in future.
