Applied Research in Engineering Sciences (M. Sc.)

[Translate to English:] Junger Mann mit VR-Brille sieht virtuelles MaschinenbauteilApply online from May 2!

The "Applied Research in Engineering Sciences" (APR for short, often referred to as "Research Master" at THI) Master's degree program offers outstanding engineers and computer scientists the opportunity to receive comprehensive and advanced training for a career in applied research and development. Each student is assigned a research assistant as a mentor, which enables comprehensive support throughout the entire Master's program.

In addition to lectures and seminars, the course includes specific projects at THI. Together with the mentor and supervising professor, students select lectures from a large pool of courses to suit their projects and interests. The courses can be individually selected from the fields of electrical engineering, computer science and mechatronics as well as from related disciplines. The research master's degree offers the perfect preparation for a possible doctorate or for higher-level tasks in industry. The course offers excellent preparation for project management in development departments or innovation management in large, small and medium-sized companies.

Structure of the study program

The Master's degree course in Applied Research in Engineering Sciences is designed as a full-time course and comprises a standard period of study of three theoretical semesters with a total of 90 ECTS credits. Intensive work on a specific research project and numerous elective options allow students to set their own individual focus. At the beginning of the program, the student chooses a specific research project together with the mentor and the supervising professor at THI, which he or she works on throughout the entire course. This research project is offered according to the respective subject areas and current research projects, is the focus of the degree program and forms the basis for all further content. For each student, the curriculum is individually filled with courses that match the respective project. The responsible professor or mentor supervises the student for the entire duration of the course. In Ingolstadt, the Faculties of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical engineering and Industrial Engineering are currently participating in the APR program. A semester abroad is possible after consultation with the supervising professor and is supported.

  • a further compulsory elective module of the chosen faculty with 5 ECTS
  • an interdisciplinary compulsory elective module from one of the two other faculties with 5 ECTS credits
  • Research methods and strategies modules with 6 ECTS;
  • Project work 2 (12 ECTS)
  • Integration into the research work (2 ECTS)

Third semester (WS)

  • Master's thesis (28 ECTS) and seminar on the Master's thesis (2 ECTS)

Modules of the study program

The degree program consists of 4 different module groups:

  • The subject-specific compulsory elective modules FWPM 1-3 and the interdisciplinary compulsory elective module IWPM 1 are selected by the student individually and in cooperation with the supervising professor from a list of Master's courses offered by THI. The three FWPM must be chosen from the student's own faculty and the IWPM from one of the two other faculties. A description of the contents of the individual modules can be found in the module handbook.
  • The subject-specific compulsory elective module FWPM 4 and the Research Methods and Strategies FM&S module are selected from a range of courses offered by the nine partner universities, each worth 6 ECTS credits. This range is updated every semester. Three of these are from the subject-specific compulsory elective module FWPM4 and three from the research methods and strategies FM&S module.
  • The two projects 1 and 2 in the first two semesters and the Master's thesis build on each other thematically and are supervised throughout by a mentor and professor at THI.
  • Each semester, either a local project seminar or the inter-university Applied Research Conference (ARC) takes place, at which the current results can be published. Every student takes part in the ARC at least once during the course of their studies.

Quick Info

Admission and application

Find a research topic

A prerequisite for an interesting and successful APR program is the availability of a suitable research project. Research topics can be discussed and agreed directly with a specific professor in advance. In the case of a general request, a topic is assigned in consultation with the head of the degree program, Prof. Christian Endisch.

APR students can usually receive financial remuneration if they are involved in project work beyond the scope of the Research Master's degree. Due to the existing Bachelor's degree, there is the possibility of employment as a research assistant at remuneration level 12 with a maximum of 20 hours, which corresponds to around €2,000 per month. Details must be clarified in advance with the supervising professor.

An information event on the APR will be held in good time for the start of the application period. A selection of open projects will also be presented there (see information event).

Qualification requirements

The following qualification requirements must be met for admission to the APR program:

  • Successful completion of a Bachelor's degree program in the fields of electrical engineering or information technology, computer science, mechanical engineering or related SPO Master Applied Research disciplines
    • at least 210 credit points (ETCS)
    • an overall examination result of at least 2.5 or a relative grade that shows a degree among the 35 % of the best graduates of the comparative cohort of the respective applicants
  • a successfully completed aptitude assessment procedure (see aptitude assessment procedure)

If the previous Bachelor's degree course (e.g. at another university) only comprised six semesters, only 180 credits are generally awarded. In such a case, coursework amounting to 30 credits must be made up. This can be a practical semester or other coursework can also be recognized. In any case, it is advisable to contact the academic advisor.

Application deadlines
You can apply online from May 2 to July 15 (for the winter semester) and from November 15 to January 15 (for the summer semester).

Application form
You can apply online via Primuss: Application for Master study course

The application must be accompanied by

  • Degree certificate or grade sheet with average grade
  • Curriculum vitae in tabular form in German
  • Proof of German language proficiency B2 (for foreign applicants)
  • If applicable, proof of 30 additional ECTS (certificates of internships, vocational training, professional activity)
Suitability assessment procedure

Applicants who meet the formal admission requirements will be invited to the aptitude assessment procedure in the form of a 30-minute selection interview (colloquium). The invitation to the selection procedure is sent approximately 10 days before the date. The topic is agreed independently between the applicant and the supervising professor.

  • The invited applicants give a short presentation on the agreed academic topic (approx. 15 minutes)
  • This is followed by a discussion or questioning by the selection committee

The following assessment criteria must be met:

Professional aptitude

  • Ability to penetrate a topic from a technical/scientific perspective
  • Methodical approach to the development of solutions
  • Originality of the solution approaches
  • Systematic approach in your own evaluation of the solution approaches
  • Proven special skills in organizing and carrying out engineering and scientific projects on the basis of project work and theses

Presentation and personal aptitude

  • Structuring and presentation of a scientific topic
  • Red thread; limitation to the essentials
  • Linguistic fluency
  • Contact and communication skills

The arithmetic mean is calculated from the overall grade of the selection interview and the overall grade of the Bachelor's certificate. A grade of 2.5 or better is required as proof of aptitude.

Extras

The Master's degree course in APR is an independent course of study at Ingolstadt University of Applied Sciences, which is offered in cooperation with other universities.

Students also have the opportunity to attend cross-university events. There is also the opportunity to take part in the jointly organized AR conference.

We look forward to receiving your application!
