How Sustainable is the Production of Asphalt?

Norbert Stoll, an employee of Richard Schulz in Bergheim, answered this question and more for a group of Neuburg students during an exclusive factory tour.

Interesting insight: The students visited the asphalt mixing plant (Photo: THI).

Norbert Stoll gave a tour of the plant and explained in detail how the asphalt mixing plant works in the asphalt laboratory.

Approximately 70% of the asphalt is produced from recycled asphalt-milled material. The aim is always to ‘get the maximum out’ of the recycled asphalt. A large loader permanently fills the plant with used asphalt-milled material.

From 2026, the asphalt may only be laid at a lower temperature. This is solely for the protection of employees to prevent the inhalation of harmful aerosols during asphalt paving. The asphalt industry is currently undergoing a change here, as the companies themselves are responsible for reducing the paving temperatures without compromising the paving quality of the asphalt. There are various monitoring tests for this.

For the students, it was an interesting insight into the daily work in a mixing plant.
