The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information TechnologyT has expanded to include a working group on the topic of life science. The team consists of experts in medical technology and an expert in applied, clinical medicine. With this combination of competences, we can impart the knowledge from physics, electrical engineering and medicine that is needed for the development of electronic devices to improve health in the Bio-Electrical Engineering degree programme:

We welcome to our faculty Prof. Dr. Marion Menzel, holder of a professorship in Biomechatronics and Sensor Data Analysis. After studying chemistry at RWTH Aachen University, she completed her doctorate in magnetic resonance imaging at RWTH Aachen University and her habilitation in experimental physics at TU Munich. For 20 years she has been involved in research and development in magnetic resonance imaging, among others at Siemens AG Erlangen, Forschungszentrum Jülich and General Electric Healthcare in Munich.

Prof. Dr. Menzel's goal is to establish medical imaging, especially MRI, as an exciting, interdisciplinary field of research at TH Ingolstadt. At the same time, she would like to convey in teaching how varied and relevant imaging is for modern, medical diagnostics.

We would also like to welcome Prof. Dr. Sonja Karg, holder of the Chair of Medical Engineering and Biosignal Processing. After studying electrical engineering and information technology at the TU Munich, she completed her doctorate at the Chair of Real-Time Computer Systems at the TU Munich. Prof. Karg was active in research on human gait regulation and balance in collaboration with the dizziness outpatient clinic and the research centre of the Klinikum Großhadern. She then worked in hearing research at the Medical Technology Institute of the TU Munich together with manufacturers and the clinics of the LMU and TUM.

Porf. Karg's special interest is research on cochlear implants - neuroprostheses that allow deaf people to hear again. She would like to contribute to a better understanding of basic psychoacoustic phenomena in electrical stimulation, e.g. of auditory neurons. She would like to provide students with an overview of the broad field of medical technology from the simplest applications such as blood pressure measurement to neuroprostheses and give in-depth insights into selected applications of (electro)technology in the medical environment. 

A warm welcome also to Prof. Dr. Matthias Eckert, holder of a professorship in medicine and microbiology. After studying human medicine at LMU Munich, he most recently worked as a radiology specialist at Klinikum Ingolstadt. He has extensive clinical expertise with a focus on diagnostic and interventional radiology. His previous research involved software development of cardiac CT diagnostics at Siemens Corporate Research (Princeton, NJ, USA) and he completed his PhD in flat detector CT imaging of acute stroke at FAU Erlangen.

As a professor, he is able to share his enthusiasm for the topics in medical science with the students through his teaching in the life science programmes at THI, thus educating innovative minds of tomorrow. With his expertise, he would like to enable students to participate in technological innovations in medicine in the future and thus give many people a future worth living.
