Intelligent Aerial Systems (M. Eng.)

NEW from winter semester 2026/27, application open from 2 May

Virtual Open Day, 4 May 2026 at 3 pm

Q&A session with Student counselling & International Welcome Center & Service Centre Student Affairs

More info here

Are you interested in interdisciplinary issues relating to the development of autonomous systems with a high affinity for technology and a willingness to innovate? Do you think in systems, do you have analytical skills and do you enjoy developing, simulating and researching complex systems? The English-language Master's degree programme in Intelligent Aerial Systems is aimed at graduates of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Computer Science, Aeronautical Engineering or comparable Engineering Sciences and qualifies them as specialists in the development of unmanned aerial systems.

Autonomous and networked aerial systems are considered one of the key technologies of the coming decades for transport and logistics, disaster management and environmental protection, aerial surveillance and safety, as well as infrastructure inspection and surveying. Socially and ecologically, autonomous systems have decisive advantages over conventional drones or helicopters in terms of sustainability (low-emission transport, optimised flight routes), safety and resilience (airspace surveillance, reconnaissance, monitoring missions in the event of forest fires or floods, rescue operations).

The study course provides the knowledge and skills required to design and implement components of autonomous, intelligent and networked flight systems. The focus is on acquiring the skills needed to develop flight systems that use sensors, planning and control algorithms and Artificial Intelligence to perceive their environment and react to changing situations. Knowledge such as flight dynamics, control of flight systems and avionics is expanded by technologies such as sensor technology, artificial intelligence, autonomous navigation and methods for determining optimal, safe and efficient flight paths for unmanned aerial vehicles. Students acquire the necessary knowledge to master the challenges of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and drones - from urban use to scientific research in remote areas.

Appointments and career prospects

The future fields of activity of graduates are focussed on the following sectors:

  • Security and defence
  • Aviation industry and logistics companies

Quick Info

Admission and application

Application for a study course
The study course starts in both the summer semester (15 March) and the winter semester (1 October).

Application deadlines
15. November - 28 February for admission to the summer semester;
2 May - 31 August for admission to the winter semester;

Please apply online in our Primuss portal - all information about the Master's application

Prerequisites

A Bachelor's degree in Electrical and Information Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related engineering discipline with 180 ECTS credits is required. For the application we ask for a copy of the degree certificate and the Transcript of Records/Grade Sheet. Provisional certificates and transcripts, if available, will be accepted. In the event of admission, however, the final certificate must be submitted at the time of Enrollment. Master's applicants with relevant previous studies abroad require a VPD from uni-assist.

Language skills

In addition, we require sufficient knowledge of English, which must be proven by a B2 level certificate. Proof is not required if the Abitur certificate or Bachelor degree was obtained in English or if the applicant is a national of a country where English is the native language.
German language skills at level A1 are required for further academic study. Proof is not required for admission, but must be provided by the end of the first semester. During the academic study programme, we promote an increase in the German language level to A2 through the "General Elective". All information on proof of language proficiency.

Information for applicants

  1. Applicants with a Bachelor's degree obtained in Germany or with EU citizenship will be granted admission without any further aptitude test, provided the general admission requirements are met.
  2. Applicants with a Bachelor's degree obtained in a non-EU country undergo a selection procedure, provided that the formal admission requirements are met.
The selection procedure consists of two stages. In stage 1, a curricular analysis is carried out. This is based on the type and scope of the modules in which skills are taught that are expected to lead to successful completion of the master's programme. In addition, an assessment is made of the autonomy and subject-specific relevance of the thesis in the Bachelor's programme for working on a task in the development of mechatronic systems. Applicants who have achieved a total score of 70 points or more will be invited to a short online selection interview. A pass in the selection interview leads to admission. The interviews will take place from mid-June to the end of July 2026. The faculty will inform invited applicants by email about the specific interview date.
  3. Please note the Statutes for International Orientation and Selection Procedures and the procedural elements selected for this master's programme.
Intercultural training, German courses and mentoring

Our international full-time students can gain a foothold in the German labour market after completing their academic studies at THI. To do this, it is important that they have the relevant German language skills and soft skills in regional studies and intercultural communication. We offer our international students the following programmes in these areas:

  • Intercultural seminars: In intercultural workshops and training sessions, our international students learn about the special features of German culture in an intensive and practical way. This enables them to move confidently and self-assuredly in intercultural situations.
  • General and specialised German courses: We offer our international students German courses at all levels - both general language and subject-specific. Our courses are tailored to the needs of students and prepare them for both academic study and later professional life.
  • Regional studies events and excursions: Whether our international students are studying in Ingolstadt or Neuburg - we help them to get to know their respective university city better. Our international students quickly get a good orientation during numerous city tours and learn a lot of interesting facts about history, culture and traditions. It is also important to us that international students quickly come into contact with German-speaking students. At events such as Bavarian evenings, Germany evenings or country and cultural exchange evenings, each focussing on a specific country, our international and German students have numerous opportunities to get to know each other in a relaxed atmosphere every semester. We also give our international students an insight into important German holidays such as the Day of German Unity (bank holidays) or Easter with joint events. Our exciting excursions for international students with an intercultural or regional focus round off our intercultural learning programmes. Our international students get to know other Bavarian cities, visit museums, memorials and other important places in order to understand Germany and German culture.
  • Mentoring programme: In our mentoring programme, German or multilingual mentors (committed students) accompany our international full-time students with advice and exchange during their studies. For example, they welcome the new internationals at the railway station, accompany them on visits to the authorities, show them the city or help with necessary errands such as a visit to the bank. They also answer questions about life in Germany from a student perspective.
Job profiles

Graduates of the study course are primarily prepared for specialist and management tasks in the following areas:

  • Model-based systems engineering, including the design of sensors,
  • actuators and energy supply as well as the design of control and stabilisation systems
  • Development of autonomy architectures and realisation of flight guidance systems (navigation, guidance & control)
  • Implementation of communication and coordination in networked autonomous systems
  • Development of machine learning algorithms for efficient environment perception, flight optimisation and mission planning
  • Interface management between electronics, software, communication and mechanics

Note on application agencies

THI is currently receiving an increasing amount of information about fraudulent activities in connection with student applications to THI. Therefore, it is important that you know the following:

  1. THI does not work with agencies. Please apply directly to THI via the Primuss application portal.
  2. THI never asks for money through agencies for application purposes.
  3. THI only sends emails from @thi.de.
  4. THI never asks for money before you receive your letter of admission. If you need a VPD from uni-assist, you will have to pay a processing fee to uni-assist. However, uni-assist only checks certain documents and does not grant admission to THI.
  5. The application procedure is carried out in the THI Primuss Portal. You can only view the status of your application there.

We're looking forward to your application
