How do you design products that impress in terms of both function and design?

Do you want to develop innovative products that inspire people, impress with their technical prowess and offer forward-looking solutions? On the Bachelor’s degree programme in Technical Design, you’ll combine design, technology and digital innovation, and learn how ideas are turned into marketable products. You’ll gain practical experience in design, modelling, animation, physical computing, human-centred design and ergonomics, and utilise modern technologies such as VR/AR, AI-based applications, generative design and digital manufacturing to develop, test and refine concepts.

The programme encourages interdisciplinary work and combines creative problem-solving with engineering thinking. In projects, you will analyse technical requirements, develop user-centred solutions and design products that combine high functionality with aesthetic appeal. The focus is on a willingness to experiment, prototyping and iterative development processes. Through personalised support, state-of-the-art laboratories and collaboration with industry partners, you will gain practical experience early on and prepare yourself for roles in design, product development and innovation management.

The specific technical subjects making up the course of study are based on the classic content of an engineering degree. The design-specific modules focus on design theory, methodical working, representation technology and computer-aided design techniques. The main emphasis of the study course lies in the interdisciplinary interplay between design and technology and is communicated through intensively supported projects.

The fundamental requirements of the course are creativity, a joy of experimentation, empathy and flexibility.

The dual studies programme enables a combination of practical training elements in a company with the theoretical education provided by the university. There is a choice of either the joint model (academic study + vocational training) or the degree course with vocational experience (academic study + intense practical phases). There is an obvious advantage to students here: practically oriented academic study generally enables a particularly smooth transition from university to the world of work. What is more, the student usually receives financial remuneration from the company concerned.

In the joint model, students may start working at the company several months before the start of the first semester, depending on the company concerned. At the start of the course there is an alternation between theory (during the semester) and practical experience (between semesters and during the practical semesters). In order to embark on a dual studies programme, students have to apply to both a company and to THI (be sure to take note of company application deadlines!).

Technical designers work, among other areas, in product conception, the interface between the design and the technical areas, and as all-rounders with the ability to view and evaluate all aspects of product development.

The study programme requires a preparatory internship of at least 6 weeks, which has to be completed before the start of the 4th semester (during semester breaks). The preparatory internship is not part of our admission requirements.

To prepare for your semester abroad or to learn another foreign language alongside your studies, you can take language courses at THI's own Language Center (Sprachenzentrum). The language courses are taught only by native speakers and offered at different levels. All courses are free of charge for our students.
