Hydrogen Storage and Transportation
This module covers thermodynamic fundamentals as well as physical, material-based and chemical technologies for hydrogen storage and transport, including safety, environmental and economic assessment.
Are you passionate about the potential of hydrogen technologies and would you like to specialise in this field after completing your Bachelor’s degree in engineering? The Master’s programme in Hydrogen Technology and Economics at THI offers you the highest level of specialist expertise in this field.
You will learn to understand the hydrogen technology chain – from production through storage and transport to the associated applications – to develop new products and solutions, and to assess these in terms of their economic viability and sustainability. These are skills that are in high demand for specialist and managerial roles in this sector.
The three-semester programme is divided into two theory semesters, during which you’ll attend specialist lectures in German and English, and one semester dedicated to your Master’s thesis. You can study the Master’s programme on-campus or online. Laboratory practicals take place on-campus during a few block sessions. Throughout the programme, you can expect intensive support and networking opportunities.
Previous title of the master's degree: Hydrogen Technology and Economics
Starting in the winter semester 2026/27, only the English-language master's degree in Hydrogen Technologies & Applications will be offered to new students.
As a graduate of the degree programme, you will be prepared for specialist and management tasks in the following areas:

This module covers thermodynamic fundamentals as well as physical, material-based and chemical technologies for hydrogen storage and transport, including safety, environmental and economic assessment.

This module provides an overview of concepts, applications and framework conditions of the hydrogen economy, including sustainability aspects and ecological and economic evaluation.

This module addresses the role of hydrogen in energy systems and markets, including energy economics, market mechanisms, storage technologies, regulatory frameworks and substitution potentials.

This module provides safety fundamentals for hydrogen applications, covering hazard identification, codes and standards, and methods for safety analysis and assessment.

Details of the individual compulsory-elective modules can be found in the programme’s module handbook.

This module covers electrochemical fundamentals and the design, operation and integration of electrolyzers and fuel cells, including efficiency, degradation, standards and economic aspects.

This module introduces systems engineering methods for the development of complex technical systems, focusing on requirements analysis, system design, modeling, project and quality management.

In the start-up project, students work in teams on a techno-economic hydrogen-related challenge, aiming to develop a viable technical solution and business model.

This module covers numerical methods and simulation techniques such as CFD and finite-volume methods for modeling thermal, hydraulic and chemical processes in energy systems.

This module introduces fundamentals and processes of hydrogen production. It covers fossil-based, electrolytic and biological pathways, safety aspects, hydrogen purification and technical, ecological and economic evaluations.

Details of the individual compulsory-elective modules can be found in the programme’s module handbook.

This module covers fundamentals of process engineering and plant design in hydrogen technology, including equipment design, project planning and safety- and material-specific requirements.

The master's thesis involves the independent scientific investigation of a complex topic in hydrogen technology and economics, including research, analysis and academic documentation.

Applicants with a bachelor’s degree obtained in a non-EU country must undergo a selection process, provided that the formal entry requirements are met.
The selection process consists of two stages. For admission to THI, the following criteria are applied in Stage 1, which increase your chances of being admitted:
1. Bachelor’s degree grade
2. University ranking
3. Practical experience
4. Entrance test for Master’s programmes, such as the GRE General Test (Graduate Record Examination)
Candidates selected on the basis of these criteria will be invited to online selection interviews.
An assessment interview that is judged as passed leads to admission.
The faculty informs invited applicants by email about the specific interview appointment.
The Hydrogen Technologies and Economics degree programme is aimed at German and foreign students who, building on their technical education, would like to deepen the field of hydrogen technologie or enter this field. By technical education we mean a technical bachelor's degree. Please contact Professor Dr. Akgün if you have any questions.
Do you have any questions about applications, admission, enrolment, student finance, accommodation or other general topics? If so, please use our contact form and select the relevant topic. This will ensure your enquiry is sent directly to the relevant contact person(s) and can be answered quickly and effectively.
