The Ingolstadt AI Mobility Hub is dedicated to the AI-based mobility of the future
Introducing AImotion Bavaria
AImotion Bavaria is the AI mobility hub based at Ingolstadt University of Technology as part of the Bavarian High-Tech Agenda. The institute researches and develops innovative solutions for the mobility of the future, focusing on autonomous driving, unmanned aerial vehicles, AI-based production and robotics, as well as digital business models. The aim is to translate research findings into practical applications, bring new technologies to life and drive forward sustainable innovations that deliver social value.
Behind AImotion Bavaria’s success are dedicated scientists, researchers and staff from a range of disciplines. With their expertise and passion, they drive forward innovative research projects and develop intelligent technologies for the mobility and manufacturing of tomorrow.
Research at the AImotion Bavaria Institute
Our aim is to make the world a little bit better with the help of artificial intelligence. To this end, we are conducting research into technologies that, for example, make autonomous driving and unmanned flight safer, conserve resources through efficient production processes, reduce CO₂ emissions through optimised traffic management, and enable the detection of cancer cells at an earlier stage. To achieve this goal, our scientists are conducting research in government-funded or industry-funded projects. At AImotion Bavaria, we are establishing over 20 research professorships and a total of 120 research staff by 2025, with the aim of making a lasting impact on cutting-edge AI research in Germany, Europe and worldwide.
Our areas of expertise and technologies
Autonomous driving
At the heart of the AI node is the ‘Autonomous Driving’ application cluster. Vehicle automation is one of the most significant changes in future mobility concepts. Drivers will gradually be relieved of driving tasks and will be able to devote themselves to other activities whilst on the move.
Commerce
The research area ‘AI Business Models and Services’ focuses on investigating new mobility concepts and innovative, sometimes disruptive mobility business models in which data and AI processes form a fundamental part of the business model. Particular attention is paid to intermodal mobility concepts that link car-based mobility with local public transport, personal micromobility and even urban air mobility.
Computer Vision
The Computer Vision research area focuses on advanced AI methods in the field of image processing. Particular attention is paid to the constraints that must be taken into account when using cameras in mobility systems, such as adverse environmental conditions or high dynamic range. The aim is to investigate AI architectures that can reliably ensure a high standard of detection from camera data, even under such boundary conditions.
Ethics
Our research group is dedicated to the ethical study of artificial intelligence, with a focus on human–AI interaction and its societal implications. The aim is to gain a better understanding of how AI systems influence human behaviour, decision-making and perception. Our work centres on the ethical implications of AI in theory and practice.
Digital production
Key challenges in automotive production include the digital networking of production systems, the optimisation of production, logistics and quality assurance processes, and the transition to climate-neutral production. Intelligent data capture, semantically usable storage and algorithmic processing of large volumes of heterogeneous data play a key role in addressing these challenges.
Medicine
Nowadays, the vast majority of medical diagnoses and decisions are based on data, whether it be laboratory results from a blood test or the radiological analysis of a CT scan. Medical experts have learnt to interpret this data and extract diagnostically relevant information from it with remarkable precision.
However, this wealth of combined medical images and datasets can yield even more insights when it is combined with and analysed using modern machine learning techniques.
Understanding language and text
In our research projects in the fields of higher education, public transport and AI, we combine fundamental AI research with practical applications. Our work involves developing and refining AI methods to improve machine speech and text recognition, making interactions more intuitive and efficient.
Unmanned flight
The development of autonomous and unmanned aviation (UAS) offers Bavaria enormous potential for value creation. New business sectors such as Urban Air Mobility (UAM) and innovative drone technologies are on the cusp of widespread adoption.
Mobility systems and infrastructure
Sustainable and smart mobility systems, and the smart infrastructure they comprise, play a central role both in meeting climate targets and in the development of automated driving. Research into sustainable and smart mobility systems and smart infrastructure is therefore a key component of the AI Mobility Hub. The aim of this research area is to utilise data analysis and AI methods for the design and control of mobility systems.
Publications
Our researchers regularly present their work at national and international conferences and publish in specialist journals.
