Important innovations of recent years, carried out in the areas of engine control, comfort functions, driver assistance, infotainment or networking and communication, have been based on electrics / electronics. The automobile has become a complex system of various mechatronic technologies which still have to be adapted to individual needs but with a future demand of intensive use of intelligent connections between technology and communication. Among others the following perspectives point towards the direction to the kind of changes that are coming and that affects traditional OEMs and suppliers, potential new players, regulators, consumers, national car markets, and the automotive value chain. Electrified vehicles are becoming viable and competitive. Once technological and regulatory issues have been resolved, the percentage of new cars which are partly or fully autonomous will increase. Car manufacturers are seriously looking into researching technologies that would enable future cars to communicate with each other and with objects around them. These technologies will transform the way we drive and increase automotive safety dramatically.

In the field of automotive development, strong efforts should be made on national and international level to adequately prepare students for coping with the technical exigencies of future automobiles. Engineers with interdisciplinary knowledge in mechanics, electronics and computer science are particularly wanted. The Master-programme International Automotive Engineering (IAE) wants to impart dedicated engineering approaches for the development of automotive mechatronic systems and to give instructions for solving specific problems of developing automotive electronic systems in general as well as for vehicle safety systems specifically.

Information related to the requirements for this programme is available at the bottom of the page.

Structure

Compulsory modules

Compulsory modules of the curriculum impart well-founded specialist skills in the following areas: functions and structures of electrified drives, features and application forms of vehicle-specific sensors and actuators, function development, realization and validation of driver assistance and vehicle safety systems as well as on the hierarchical process of developing such systems. This enables students to specify and implement mechatronic driver assistance and vehicle safety systems. In projects and seminars, students also acquire skills and abilities relating to communication, cooperation and conflicts in intra- and intercultural contexts.

Communication and intercultural competence

English as language of instruction and internationally composed groups of students encourage foreign language skills as well as dealing with cultural differences. However, acquisition of knowledge of the German language at level A2 is encouraged by means of a compulsory language course.

Requirements

A Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline with 180 ECTS credit points is required. For application, we ask for a copy of the degree certification as well as of the transcript of records/grade sheet. Provisional certificates and transcripts as available are accepted. However, in case of admission the final certificate must be shown at registration/enrollment. Master's applicants with relevant previous studies outside Germany require a VPD from uni-assist.

Documents

In addition, we ask for sufficient English language skills, documented by a certification of level B2. The proof is not required provided the university entrance qualification certificate (certification of secondary school) or the Bachelor's degree was acquired in English or the applicant possesses the citizenship of a country in which English is the native language.
Knowledgeof the German language at level A1 is required for the further course of study. A certification is not required for admission, but must be provided by the end of the first semester.

During the course of study, we encourage students to improve their German language skills to level A2 by offering the ‘German Language Elective’ programme.

Important Information for Applicants

  1. Applicants with a bachelor's degree obtained in Germany or with EU citizenship will be admitted without further aptitude test, provided that the general admission requirements are met.
  2. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree obtained abroad will undergo a selection process, provided that the general entry requirements are met.
The selection process consists of two stages. Stage 1 involves a curriculum analysis. This examines the nature and scope of the modules in which skills are taught that suggest the applicant is likely to successfully complete the Master’s programme. Furthermore, an assessment is made of the thematic and subject-specific relevance of the Bachelor’s thesis to the development of mechatronic systems. Applicants who have achieved a total score of 60 points or more will be invited to a short online selection interview. A successful interview will result in admission.
The interviews will take place from mid-June to the end of July 2026. The faculty will inform invited applicants of the specific interview date by email.
Please note the Statutes for International Orientation and Selection Procedures as well as the procedural elements chosen for this master's degree program.
Tuition Fees and Financing

Dual Studies

The dual Master's programme at THI offers optimal career opportunities. In addition to the regular degree programme, the dual Master's programme includes intensive work experience in a company. It is consecutive and is aimed at both non-dual and dual Bachelor graduates who have previously completed a combined degree programme or a degree programme with in-depth practical experience.

During the dual Master's programme, you will receive a salary from your company. The salary for Master's degree programmes should be appropriately higher than the salary for Bachelor's degree programmes.

Special feature: Normal duration of study with significantly more practical experience than in a regular Master's programme

Intercultural training, German courses and mentoring

Our international full-time students can gain a foothold in the German labour market after completing their studies at THI. To do this, it is important that they have a good knowledge of German and soft skills in regional studies and intercultural communication. We offer our international students the following programmes in these areas:

  • Intercultural seminars:In intercultural workshops and training courses, our international students familiarise themselves intensively and practically with the special features of German culture. This enables them to move confidently and self-assuredly in intercultural situations.
  • General and specialised German courses:We offer our international students German courses at all levels - both general language and subject-specific. Our courses at the THI Language Center are tailored to the needs of students and prepare them for both their studies and their future careers.
  • Regional events and excursions:Whether our international students are studying in Ingolstadt or Neuburg, we help them to get to know their university city better. Our international students quickly get a good orientation during numerous city tours and learn a lot of interesting facts about history, culture and traditions. It is also important to us that international students quickly come into contact with German-speaking students. At events such as Bavarian evenings, Germany evenings or country and cultural exchange evenings, each focussing on a specific country, our international and German students have numerous opportunities each semester to get to know each other in a relaxed atmosphere. We also give our international students an insight into important German holidays such as the Day of German Unity (bank holidays) or Easter with joint events. Our exciting excursions for international students with an intercultural or regional focus round off our intercultural learning programmes. Our international students get to know other Bavarian cities, visit museums, memorials and other important places in order to understand Germany and German culture.
  • Mentoring programme:In our mentoring programme, German or multilingual mentors (dedicated students) accompany our international full-time students with advice and exchange during their time at university. For example, they welcome the new internationals at the train station, accompany them on visits to the authorities, show them the city or help with necessary errands such as a visit to the bank. They also answer questions about life in Germany from a student perspective.
Note on Application Agencies

Currently, THI is receiving an increasing amount of information regarding fraudulent activities in connection with student applications to THI. Therefore, it is important for you to know the following:

  1. THI does not work with agencies. Please apply directly to THI via the Primuss application portal.
  2. THI never asks for money via agencies for application purposes.
  3. THI only sends emails from @thi.de.
  4. THI never asks for money before you receive your admission letter. If you need a VPD from uni-assist, you will have to pay a processing fee to uni-assist. However, uni-assist only checks certain documents and does not grant admission to THI.
