Project SHIFT

- Strategic Hub for International Future Talent

The SHIFT project facilitates the establishment and further development of the THI's International Welcome Centre by developing and testing experimental methods and structures for prospective and current international students to help them start and succeed in their studies and support them entering the German job market. The project is divided into three main areas: ‘Study preparation’, ‘Study success’ and ‘Career entry’ in order to make the overall guidance and support of international students throughout the student life cycle more efficient and effective in the long term.

The pilot courses and services will be implemented and evaluated over the course of the project in the Sustainable Civil Engineering (B.Eng.), Renewable Energy Systems (M.Sc.) and Engineering and Management (B.Eng.) degree programs.  Subsequently, the measures developed and tested will be extended beyond the pilot phase to all 16 English-taught international degree programs at THI in the long term.

The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) from 2024 to 2028 as part of the FIT funding initiative "FIT - Promotion of international talents for integration into studies and the labour market".

Study preparation

In the area of study preparation, course-specific preparatory programs ‘Study Sprints’ are offered to allow international prospective students to acquire foundational skills in one semester. As part of the preparation program, participants attend various subject-specific preparatory courses, German courses as well as intercultural training and get to know student life in Ingolstadt and German culture before starting their studies at THI. The structured academic and cultural preparation program is intended to make it easier for students to start their studies and integrate to increase their academic success.

The preparatory program is being implemented as a pilot for the Renewable Energy Systems (M.Sc.) degree programme. The so-called Study Sprint Renewable Energy Systems (Study Sprint RES) was introduced in the summer semester of 2025 and has since started every summer semester.

SHIFT Study Sprint Renewable Energy Systems

General description

The global energy sector is currently undergoing a massive transformation: renewable energy is one of the most important issues of the 21st century, and global investment in solar, wind and other renewable technologies is rising rapidly. However, as renewable energy is weather-dependent and more variable, a flexible and interconnected energy system is becoming increasingly important – and complex. The Master’s programme in Renewable Energy Systems at THI prepares students for a career in this dynamic and innovative sector by providing knowledge of modern energy systems, energy storage and key technologies, as well as energy markets and policy.

For international students, we also offer the unique opportunity to take part in the SHIFT Study Sprint, a preparatory programme run during the summer semester (mid-March to the end of July). The programme prepares participants for their studies in Germany in terms of subject content, general academic standards and culture. You will deepen your understanding of key concepts and refine your grasp of the fundamental principles of renewable energy, whilst getting to know German culture and student life at THI. We have planned an exciting mix of courses, excursions and workshops for you. Once you have been accepted onto the RES Study Sprint, attendance at all programme components and modules listed in the curriculum is compulsory.

An important part of integration is learning the language – which is why we have designed German language courses for international students to give you, as a participant, the best possible start. Learning German will make it easier for you to integrate, meet new people and cope with everyday life, as well as improving your prospects on the German labour market.

As the preparatory programme takes place during the summer term, you can transition seamlessly into the Master’s programme in Renewable Energy Systems, which begins every year in October for the winter term.

Please note: A standard application and admission to the M.Sc. in Renewable Energy Systems are still required.

Study success

In the area of study success, methods and structures to increase student success are developed, tested and evaluated. These methods range from language courses and intercultural training to workshops, e.g. on scientific working, to counselling offers, events such as games nights and excursions to promote social integration. Regular surveys are conducted to identify the needs and challenges of international students as well as the impact of the various activities in order to continuously optimise them.

The measures for student success are being tested in all three degree-programs - Engineering and Management (B.Eng.), Sustainable Civil Engineering (B.Sc.) and Renewable Energy System (M.Sc.). Additionally, a subject-specific mentoring programme was developed and introduced for the Engineering and Management degree programme, while an Early Semester Coaching programme was developed and implemented for the Sustainable Civil Engineering degree programme.

Engineering and Management - Mentoringprogramm

Sustainable Civil Engineering - Early Semester Coaching

Weitere Informationen finden Sie hier: Studienfinanzierung

Career entry

In the area of career entry, international students are being prepared for the German labour market through a Career Development Initiative. As part of this initiative, a modular training series consisting of workshops, lectures and events is being designed to equip international students specifically for the requirements of the German labour market.

Furthermore, a variety of recruitment and networking opportunities, such as career speed dating with regional companies, will be organised and a digital networking platform will be implemented in order to pilot new formats with the objective of connecting students with local companies. For this purpose, a company network is being established and existing company contacts are being strengthened. Cooperation with the Association of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and the local Chamber of Industry and Commerce as well as the Ingolstadt Skilled Labour Alliance is crucial here.

The measures for career entry are being tested in all three degree-programs - Engineering and Management (B.Eng.), Sustainable Civil Engineering (B.Sc.) and Renewable Energy System (M.Sc.).
