Safe AI, Robotics, autonomous mobility

Master of Engineering (M. Eng.)

New Master’s programme: Simply apply AI – or recognise its limitations and take responsibility?

Developing intelligence. Taking responsibility.

Machine learning, sensor technology, control systems and networking are making machines autonomous: robots perform tasks, vehicles drive themselves, and systems make decisions in real time. On this Master’s programme, you will learn to develop such systems and demonstrate their safety, with a choice of specialisation in safe AI, Robotics or autonomous mobility systems. Autonomous systems do not develop on their own. They require people who understand Artificial Intelligence, recognise its limitations and take responsibility for the decisions made by machines. You will transition from user to developer and build the autonomous systems that people can trust.

Safe AI, Robotics, autonomous mobility

The Master’s programme in ‘Safe AI, Robotics and Autonomous Mobility’ equips you with the skills needed to develop and ensure the safety of intelligent autonomous systems, from AI methodology and system architecture right through to implementation in robots and vehicles. Whether it’s perception, learning-based control, Robotics or automated driving: with this degree, you’ll build systems that perceive, decide and act, and you’ll demonstrate that they do so safely. After all, Artificial Intelligence alone is not enough. It is crucial to understand its reliability and limitations, and to be able to demonstrate them.

The study course combines a sound methodological education with practical experience in state-of-the-art laboratories, including the CARISSMA research facility with its equipment – unique in Europe – for testing and validating autonomous vehicles. You can specialise in safe AI, Robotics or autonomous mobility systems, or combine these areas. What makes this Master’s programme special is that it does not prescribe a specific specialisation upon Enrollment. You tailor your course from a shared range of modules, and your Master’s certificate will reflect the specialisation you have chosen.
At THI, we teach and learn through personal interaction. Small groups and seminar-based course types enable intensive support and create the ideal conditions for your academic success and future career.

Job perspectives

Autonomous systems are emerging wherever machines are required to perceive, decide and act independently – in the automotive and supplier industries, in Robotics and automation technology, in mechanical and plant engineering, in aerospace, in intralogistics and in medical technology. With this degree, you will develop AI functions and control systems, integrate them into safe overall systems, demonstrate their reliability, or develop new solutions through research. As the EU AI Act makes it mandatory to demonstrate the safety of AI-based systems, additional career opportunities are emerging at testing and certification organisations, within public authorities and at research institutions, right up to the doctorate level.

  3. Important information for Master’s applicants from India

With immediate effect, applicants from India holding Bachelor degrees in Engineering, Commerce / Accounting / Finance / Economics, or Business / Management must, in addition to the VDP from uni-assist, provide evidence of having taken the Digital Master Test (dMAT) aps-india.de/dmat/ in order to obtain an APS certificate or a visa. The test costs €150. Please check whether this applies to you based on your Bachelor’s degree. THI does not answer any questions regarding the test procedure or its impact on an offer of admission from our university!

Selection process

To be eligible to apply, candidates must hold a Bachelor degree in electrical engineering and information technology, mechatronics or mathematics, in Computer Science or Artificial Intelligence, or an equivalent degree from a German or foreign institution.
Suitable candidates will undergo an aptitude test, in which an overall mark is calculated for the purposes of ranking in the admission procedure, comprising

• the mark for the first degree, weighted at 0.6•
a mark, weighted at 0.4, which assesses subject-specific aptitude, independent scientific work and experience in problem-solving, particularly in the development of AI-based or autonomous systems. The mark is determined on the basis of the following criteria:

1. Extent of specialist knowledge in the following areas: Artificial Intelligence and machine learning, stochastics, optimisation methods, programming and software development, autonomous systems, Robotics, systems theory and signal processing, modelling and simulation, control engineering, sensor technology and actuator technology (up to 30 marks);
2. The thematic and subject-specific relevance of the project work or the thesis in the Bachelor’s programme to problems requiring knowledge in the development, analysis or validation of AI-based or autonomous systems (up to 10 marks).

Suitability is deemed to have been established if the aptitude test is awarded an overall assessment of at least ‘good’ (2.5). If the aptitude test is not passed, a new application may be submitted no earlier than during the next application round.
