Research Live: The Summer School in Prague

From simulation to actual flight: At the 2026 IEEE RAS Summer School on Multi-Robot Systems in Prague, Sebastian Olzem deepened his knowledge of networked multi-UAV systems and gained new insights for his doctoral research.

For Sebastian Olzem, a doctoral candidate at the TTZ Unmanned Aerial Systems, his dissertation project focuses on the question of how networked multi-robot systems can be robustly coordinated and safely controlled. Participating in a five-day summer school at the Czech Technical University in Prague gave him the opportunity to broaden this research perspective through new methodological approaches and intensive hands-on experience.

The summer school combined theoretical lectures by renowned researchers with hands-on workshops and provided an international, interdisciplinary learning environment. A particular focus was placed on the development and testing of networked UAV systems. Working in international teams, the participants took on a challenging drone challenge and developed their solutions step by step, from simulation to deployment on real flight platforms.

The ROS-based MRS software stack was used for this purpose. Participants first learned its basic functions in the workshops and then applied them in both simulations and on real UAV platforms. The hands-on work highlighted how crucial robust algorithms, reliable communication structures, and suitable simulation and test environments are for the successful deployment of multi-UAV systems.

In addition to the technical content, the Summer School also focused on international exchange. Researchers and early-career scholars from various disciplines and countries worked together on technological challenges. For Olzem, the event thus not only provided valuable insights for his own doctoral project but also offered the opportunity to forge new international connections and expand existing research networks.

Cultural exchange was not neglected either: custom-designed drone-robot beer mugs added a touch of humor right from the start and linked the technical topic with local culture.

The methodological insights gained during the Summer School and the new international contacts Sebastian Olzem made provide a valuable foundation for his continued work on his doctoral project. At the same time, they open up new perspectives for future research collaborations in the field of networked and unmanned aerial systems.
