Exchange in the Augsburg AI Production Network

Exciting insights: The day began with a showroom tour, where innovative approaches and technologies were presented. This was followed by inspiring presentations and a guided tour of Hall 43, which gave participants an insight into current projects and research topics. The intensive dialogue with the Augsburg scientists was a networking opportunity and laid the foundation for future joint projects. Initial contacts were made and the guests from Ingolstadt directly invited their hosts to make a return visit to THI.

The AI Production Network at the University of Augsburg is dedicated to researching key topics that will pave the way for AI-based production. It is divided into two main areas. The ‘Materials & Production Technology’ area investigates how AI can be used in material and process-related issues. The aim is to take a holistic view of production processes and value creation networks, from material development to process optimization. Artificial intelligence is used to create resilient and data-based solutions. One example of this application is the use of AI in 3D printing.

In the area of ‘Digitalisation & Self-Organisation’, the focus is on researching AI methods for the digitalization of materials, products, and processes. Concepts such as the digital twin play a central role here. In addition to this, research is being carried out into how production processes can organize themselves and what role humans play in an AI-based production environment.

The visit to Augsburg is also exemplary for the promotion of young talent at THI through the Professional Tenure Track Programme. This program offers talented female scientists from practice or research the opportunity to embark on a university career, even if they still lack a doctorate or professional experience. Participants can qualify for a regular professorship at a university of applied sciences via two routes - the doctoral track for young practitioners and the practical track for young academics.

The exchange with the AI production network was a valuable stimulus for the young professors at THI. With new insights and contacts in their luggage, both sides are looking forward to realizing the first ideas for joint research projects.
