Networked aviation systems are among the key technologies of the coming years. Their fields of application range from infrastructure inspections and logistics to environmental monitoring and disaster control to new mobility solutions and applications in the defence sector. The study course focuses on flight systems that record their environment, analyse data, and perform complex tasks both independently and reliably. The new study course combines content from Computer Science, Aviation and Electrical Engineering, and Information Technology to create an interdisciplinary profile. Students acquire knowledge and methodological skills in the areas of sensor technology, navigation, flight guidance, machine learning, system architectures, and model-based development processes. Laboratory work and project-based formats complement the theoretical foundations. The new Master's programme builds on THI's existing strengths in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and mobility while expanding the university's international orientation. The lectures are held entirely in English and are aimed at applicants from Germany and abroad. Graduates have career prospects in technology-oriented companies and research institutions in the fields of aerospace engineering and logistics. The Intelligent Aerial Systems master's programme is scheduled to start in the winter semester of 2026/27. "High-performance intelligent aerial systems are only created through the interaction of different disciplines. The combination of Artificial Intelligence methods, sensor technology, communication, and systems engineering opens up completely new possibilities. We aim to prepare students to understand and further develop complex technical systems and thus contribute to their responsible and productive application," explains programme director Professor Simon Schwerd. The close connection to the Technology Transfer Center Unmanned Flight Systems in Manching opens up additional perspectives. Modern research infrastructures, interdisciplinary teams, and cooperation with partners from science and industry create practical framework conditions. This gives students an early insight into current research issues and specific areas of application. The new programme is also particularly relevant for Region 10 as a location for business and innovation. The security policy situation, transformation processes, and changing mobility requirements are presenting companies with new challenges. The qualification of skilled workers by linking science and application is very beneficial in this respect. THI President Professor Walter Schober is implementing a strategic decision of the university with this programme: "With the Master's in 'Intelligent Aerial Systems', we are specifically strengthening areas at the interface of digitalisation, Artificial Intelligence, and mobility - also with applications in the Defence sector. Together with our research activities and transfer structures, we are creating excellent conditions to promote innovation and further develop Region 10 as a centre of science and business in the long term." |
