Prof. Anders Brandt guest lecturer from Denmark visited the Faculty for Mechanical Engineering in December.

Professor Brandt is visiting us for some days from the University of Southern Denmark (SDU Mechanical Engineering), through the ERASMUS Mobility Exchange Program holding lectures on his specialty area: Vibrations and structural dynamics.

Professor Brandt answered some questions about his research and student life in Denmark.

- Professor Brandt, nice having you visit Ingolstadt and the THI!

Thank you. This is my first time here on the THI and I am very much enjoying my visit.
It is nice to meet the students, look into the laboratories and talk to professors/exchange views on projects and latest developments in the area. In Denmark, our focus lies less on Automotive and more on robotics and environmental research / renewable energy systems, so I find the days here even more interesting.

- Professor Brandt, you have more than 30 years of industrial experience – 20 of which you have made in the Swedish automotive industry. Why academia?
A number of reasons! I have started full-time teaching 9 years ago in Denmark and find, that I just have time for my research and the projects I am interested in doing.
Examples of my research areas are: structural health monitoring – fatigue life assessment and noise source identification (automotive).
I also find however, that solely theoretical knowledge is not enough to motivate students for the subject. Practical examples I can give through my industrial experience and the many projects make it easier for the students to understand theory and prepare them for their future career choices. Problem-based learning and laboratory experiences give students a solid base of knowledge along with the theory they learn.

Thank you Professor Brandt for having had some time for us and we hope, that the collaboration between the University of Southern Denmark and THI will grow and aid internationalisation / student exchange.
