Computer Science (B. Sc.)

The scientific roots of computer science lie in applied mathematics. Computer science today has many facets, which is reflected in the increasing number of interdisciplinary specialisations emerging alongside the general field of computer science. For those who do not wish to specialise too early on, pure computer science remains an attractive study programme.

Information technology applications are meanwhile integral to all fields of science. Moreover, IT systems have gained acceptance in all areas of our daily lives. These include smartphones, tablet computers, PCs, social networks, and interconnected automobiles and extend to intelligent electricity meters, refrigerators, and USB bathroom scales.
The content of a general computer science programme is based on the principles of these varied manifestations of applied information technology.
The broad range of fundamental knowledge extends over such fields as mathematics, programming, software engineering, computer architecture, operating systems, database systems, knowledge-based systems, computer networks, web technologies, computer graphics and IT security. A list of electives, including robotics, mobile communications and cryptology, allows individual emphasis of particular themes.

Contents

The bachelor's programme in computer science is of a general nature. Students gain comprehensive knowledge of the central principles and methods of computer science.
The central principles of computer science form the core of the programme; these include programming, software engineering, computer architecture, operating systems, database systems, knowledge-based systems, computer networks, web technologies, computer graphics and IT security. The lecturers at our university place great emphasis on practically oriented teaching in all areas of the programme.
A list of electives, including robotics, mobile communications and cryptology, allows students to emphasise particular themes. Naturally, it is also possible to select elective courses from the fields of business information systems or aircraft and vehicle informatics. Explicit specialisation is, however, only undertaken in the course of a subsequent master's programme.

Structure

First and Second Semesters

The first two theoretical semesters comprise the basic subjects of mathematical principles, programming, computer architecture, operating systems, fundamentals of business management, and English.

Second study phase

This phase comprises four theoretical semesters and one practical semester (generally the fifth), in which the following subjects are covered in more depth: software engineering, computer networks, database systems, algorithms and data structures, modelling and simulation, knowledge-based systems, web technologies, IT security, IT law, discrete and applied mathematics, principles of physics and electrical engineering, seminar, project, project management, and electives.

Quick Info

Admission and application

  • Applying for a degree course
Students may only begin their degree in the winter semester.

  • Registration dates
Applications for this degree may be submitted through the online application system from 2 May to 31 July.

  • Admission requirements
To gain admission to the programme, applicants need one of the following qualifications for university entrance:

    • Abitur (European Baccalaureate, A-Levels, High School Diploma)
    • Fachhochschulreife (Vocational Baccalaureate)
    • Fachgebundene Hochschulreife (Specialised A-Level)

The following link provides specific information about the application process for admission to the degree programme.

  • Admission requirements for international students
If you wish to study at a German University, you need a so-called Hochschulzugangsberechtigung (HZB), or higher education entrance qualification. This is a secondary school-leaving certificate that corresponds to the German Abitur and entitles you to study.
Students from abroad must apply for admission from the university of their choice. For your application, you will require for a Bachelor's degree:
    • a school-leaving certificate (also known as "university entrance qualification", e.g. High School Diploma, Matura, A-Levels, Bachillerato, Atestat, baccalauréat)
      or
    • proof that you have passed the university entrance examination (if required in your home country)

Dual studies or studies with in-depth practical

The dual studies programme enables a combination of practical training elements in a company with the theoretical education provided by the university. There is a choice of either the joint model (academic study + vocational training) or the degree course with vocational experience (academic study + intense practical phases). There is an obvious advantage to students here: practically oriented academic study generally enables a particularly smooth transition from university to the world of work. What is more, the student usually receives financial remuneration from the company concerned.

In the joint model, students may start working at the company several months before the start of the first semester, depending on the company concerned. At the start of the course there is an alternation between theory (during the semester) and practical experience (between semesters and during the practical semesters). In order to embark on a dual studies programme, students have to apply to both a company and to THI (be sure to take note of company application deadlines!).

More info on our dual studies-pages, or check dual cooperation partner companies. Even if no partner company is currently active in this degree programme, you are welcome to contact us.

Job profiles

Computer scientists work in all fields involving the application of information technology methods, which is the case in virtually every industry. The field of applications is hence broad and varied. You could work as a developer and supervisor of hardware and software systems and interconnected information systems for example, or you can be deployed as a developer, system architect or manager of computer science projects.Computer science is a key to the future. Computer scientists can expect long-term excellent career prospects in a constantly growing job market.

Internship

A pre-study placement is not required for the bachelor's programme in computer science.

Laboratories

The computer networks laboratory houses the typical components of the kind of high-performance computer network found in large corporate networks and operated by service providers. In this environment, students make their first encounters with the functions and practical structure and operation of computer networks (LAN).

Every semester, practical activities for the lecture in computer networks are conducted in this laboratory. Parallel to the lecture, between 50 and 100 students from a variety of study programmes test and build on their knowledge of a computer's basic communicative functions, resulting in interesting insights into the operation of networks; these are also valuable when it comes to creating personal computer networks at home.

The laboratory also houses a large area for projects and experiments involving W-LAN technology as well as experiments and exercises in IT security.
