The CARISSMA Research and Test Center at Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt is Germany's leading scientific center for vehicle safety. CARISSMA stands for Center of Automotive Research on Integrated Safety Systems and Measurement Area. The goal of the facility is to contribute to increasing traffic safety in Germany and abroad through applied research. To this end, scientists are working together with companies in the mobility industry, public agencies and research institutions from all over the world on the social challenge of "Vision Zero" - the EU's long-term goal of zero traffic fatalities.
The interdisciplinary know-how and the unique infrastructure created for CARISSMA in Ingolstadt are not only available to scientists and their research groups: Both can also be used by companies or public institutions within the framework of joint research projects. In accordance with the guidelines of the "Research Buildings" program and its mission, CARISSMA sees itself as a platform for experts from the scientific community. In addition, CARISSMA is also open to industry and cooperation partners from Europe and around the world.

The CARISSMA research and test center is home to three institutes that exploit synergy effects both among themselves and with other THI facilities, including in the areas of testing and validation, artificial intelligence, and safe automated driving.

CARISSMA Institute of Safety in Future Mobility (C-ISAFE)

The CARISSMA Institute of Safety in Future Mobility (C-ISAFE) is concerned with anticipatory accident detection and accident mitigation. It is concerned with global vehicle safety, which uses all the information available, including to guide unprotected road users safely through road traffic. With its predictive accident detection and mitigation it makes an important contribution to the EU's Vision Zero. This includes safety systems ranging from sensors to actuators and their evaluation in the context of automated driving. One focus is on protection in bad weather conditions.

The CARISSMA Institute of Automated Driving (C-IAD) focuses on the development, testing and validation of automated driving functions. In the context of road safety, the focus is on accident prevention. Here the institute is closely networked with the Research Center for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AININ - Artificial Network Ingolstadt) located at the THI. As a cross-sectional topic, the institute is intensively engaged in research on human factors (e.g. trust, acceptance, ethics) as well as user experience/usability evaluation in the field of automated driving.

The broad-based CARISSMA Institute of Electric, COnnected, and Secure Mobility (C-ECOS) at THI focuses on safe and sustainable solutions for future mobility. The research focus of the institute's five professors and 30 research assistants and doctoral students is on safe electromobility, Car2X communication, vehicle IT security, and accident analysis and safety of aircraft structures.
The application-oriented research and investigations of the institute are carried out in cooperation with national and international medium-sized industrial partners as well as research institutions and partner universities.
