The methodology puts acting entities (humans,systems) and their interaction while executing processes at the center of interest. A simple graphical notation with only a few symbols allows domain experts to describe their activities by themselves in processes from their perspective (subject behavior). The subjects synchronize their communication via messages (subject interaction) und thus assure the coherence of activities from a higher-level organizational perspective.
As the graphical notation is based on a process algebra with clear formal semantics, the resulting models can be automatically transformed into executable code. This means participants can instantly check model effectivity on the computer and modify them if necessary. After the subjects have been assigned concrete groups of people from the existing organization, the process specification can be run as an IT-supported workflow in order to process instances at execution time.
Research includes the impact of the approach on various aspects of the BPM life cycle, such as:
- Higher quality and acceptance of resulting work procedures through intensive stakeholder participation in organizationaldevelopment
- Increased agility through reduced time from model to workflow execution and through isolated behavior changes without impacting the overall context
- New opportunities for process controlling due to providing both the functional and process-oriented view within one system
- Using Design Thinking for process innovation
Research results are being published in several books and many contributions to international conferences (e.g., IEEE and ACM; see also www.s-bpm-one.org).
