Electrical Engineering for Mobile Systems (M. Eng.)

In the development process for the automobile industry, simulation and modelling of complex systems play a key role in the ability to develop products quickly and efficiently. The drive train of hybrid and electric vehicles exhibits a high level of complexity as well as many degrees of freedom.

Simulation plays a crucial role in all phases of the development process for these vehicles. Based on theoretical-scientific principles, students learn methods for mathematically depicting all key aspects of electric mobility.The subjects cover the entire spectrum - from the depiction of key components such as electrical machines, power electronics, energy storage systems, gears and combustion engines through to the entire vehicle. The degree programme also teaches analytical competence, methodological competence and the ability to reflect on one's own behaviour and actions as well as management know-how and skills. Graduates of the programme can thereby put their new expertise to practice immediately after completing their degree; or they can choose to begin a doctorate programme or join the science and research field.

The Master's programme "Electrical Engineering for Mobile Systems" comprises two full-time semesters. The third semester is dedicated to writing the master's thesis, which can also be done in a company as part of the practical work.
The course of study conveys the engineering procedures in the field of developing electrotechnical and mechatronic systems in the automobile. Without the use of model-based techniques, the complexity of these systems would no longer be manageable.

Admission and application

Application
Students of Applied Research in Engineering Sciences may begin their course in the summer or winter semester.

Registration dates
Applications for this degree may be submitted through the online application system from 2 May to 15 July (for the winter semester) and from 15 November to 15 January (for the summer semester).

Prerequisites
Bachelor’s degree with at least 210 ECTS credit points in the field of electrical engineering, IT, mechatronics, a related subject or an equivalent qualification, acquired either in Germany or abroad. As a general rule, a minimum duration of three and a half years or seven semesters is required in cases where applicants hold a bachelor’s degree that is not based on the ECTS credit point system. A decision is made each semester as to whether admission limitations apply and what these are. The grade average or waiting period required to gain a place is not stipulated in advance but will depend on the number of applications and capacity available.

Lab impressions

The teaching of model-based development methods and their tools takes place in laboratories with modern equipment.
For example, simulations and measurements on controlled synchronous machines for automotive traction drives are performed in the Laboratory for Electrical Machines and Drives during lectures.
Electric power networks in motor vehicles and power electronic components are investigated in the Laboratory for Electric Power Generation and Conversion. The interlocking of theory and practice by means of practical courses in the THI laboratories accompanying lectures is of great importance in the Master's programme in Electrical Engineering of Mobile Systems in order to clarify the procedure for modelling complex systems.
