Electrical Engineering and Electric Mobility (B. Eng.)

Electrical engineering is shaping the mobility of the future. The teaching in this degree programme is aimed at the future application fields of electric mobility and energy storage systems, an area that covers far more than just cars and bicycles, extending as it does to railway technology, materials handling, robotics and, to an increasing extent, medical engineering. With its intensive cross-fertilisation with other fields of application, this programme will prepare you for an engineering career with responsibility.

The teaching in this bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and electric mobility covers the full breadth of the field of electrical engineering. Its specialist field is electric mobility, an area that is becoming increasingly important in a variety of pure and hybrid drive systems. The bachelor's programme has been conceived to satisfy these requirements. Practical teaching imparts the knowledge and skills that graduates will need for taking on engineering jobs with responsibility. Naturally, this also includes specialist application knowledge. The bachelor's programme is characterised by its intensive cross-fertilisation with other application fields, its broad practical base, and the extensive range of careers open to graduates across a wide spectrum of industries. Although the programme clearly specialises in electric mobility, graduates are qualified to enter a wide range of industries.

Contents

The bachelor's programme in electrical engineering and electric mobility provides broad-based and applications-oriented instruction in electrical engineering and the specialist field of electric mobility. The programme is of a highly practical nature.
The initial semesters concentrate on the thorough acquisition of mathematical and scientific principles. In the second stage of the programme, the focus moves onto central areas of electrical engineering, including measurement technology and circuit design, digital engineering, control engineering, microcomputer engineering, etc. The intensive treatment of electric mobility includes modules such as power electronics, electrical drive systems, energy storage systems and electric and hybrid vehicles.

Course Structure

First study phase

The first stage of the programme comprises two theoretical semesters with the following fundamental subjects:

Introductory project, electrical engineering, engineering mathematics, programming, physics, electronic components, digital technology, measurement technology, and signals and systems.

Second study phase

The second stage comprises four theoretical semesters and one practical semester (generally the fifth), comprising in-depth study of the following subjects:

Modelling, circuit technology, digital signal processing, physical chemistry, fields and waves, control engineering, microcomputer technology, energy storage systems, vehicle electronics, power electronics, business management, electric and hybrid vehicles, dynamics of vehicle movement, electrical drive systems, mechatronic components, project, project management, and three subject-related elective modules.

The second stage of the degree programme concludes with the bachelor's thesis.

Quick Info

Admission and application

  • Applying for a degree course
Students in Electrical Engineering and Electric Mobility may only begin their degree in the winter semester.
Since the program is not subject to admission restrictions, applications are submitted exclusively via the PRIMUSS-application portal THI.

  • Application dates
Information on the application period and the application procedure can be found here: "Application for a Bachelor study course"

  • Admission requirements
To gain admission to the programme, applicants need one of the following qualifications for university entrance:

    • Abitur (European Baccalaureate, A-Levels, High School Diploma)
    • Fachhochschulreife (Vocational Baccalaureate)
    • Fachgebundene Hochschulreife (Specialised A-Level)

Follow the link for overall information about the application process
  • Admission requirements for international students
If you wish to study at a German University, you need a so-called Hochschulzugangsberechtigung (HZB), or higher education entrance qualification. This is a secondary school-leaving certificate that corresponds to the German Abitur and entitles you to study.
Students from abroad must apply for admission from the university of their choice. For your application, you will require for a Bachelor's degree:
    • a school-leaving certificate (also known as "university entrance qualification", e.g. High School Diploma, Matura, A-Levels, Bachillerato, Atestat, baccalauréat)
      or
    • proof that you have passed the university entrance examination (if required in your home country)

Dual studies or studies with in-depth practical

The dual studies programme enables a combination of practical training elements in a company with the theoretical education provided by the university. There is a choice of either the joint model (academic study + vocational training) or the degree course with vocational experience (academic study + intense practical phases). There is an obvious advantage to students here: practically oriented academic study generally enables a particularly smooth transition from university to the world of work. What is more, the student usually receives financial remuneration from the company concerned.

In the joint model, students may start working at the company several months before the start of the first semester, depending on the company concerned. At the start of the course there is an alternation between theory (during the semester) and practical experience (between semesters and during the practical semesters). In order to embark on a dual studies programme, students have to apply to both a company and to THI (be sure to take note of company application deadlines!).

More info on our dual studies-pages, or check dual cooperation partner companies. Even if no partner company is currently active in this degree programme, you are welcome to contact us.
